The University Grant Commission (UGC) informed on Saturday that the portal for Professor of Practices attracted about 4500 applications. The Professor of Practice Portal was launched on 16th May and the UGC created a new category of teachers for HEIs last year. The professors of practice will be recruited from Industry expert professionals. No formal academic qualification is required if an expert has 15 years of experience as an Industry Professional.
A portal for Professors of Practice was launched by UGC on 16th May this year aiming to hire professional experts from Industry for Higher Education Institutions/Universities/ Colleges. The new category created according to New Education Police 2020 seeks skill-based education. The NEP also focuses on Industry-Academic coordination, which fulfills the needs of industry and academics in each other as well economy also.
Till Saturday on 1st July 2023, the portal has attracted 4500 registrations among which 4346 registrations are from experts and professionals of companies while 140 registration has come from 140 universities, colleges, and institutions candidates. Although the Chairman of UGC Prof. Jgadesh Mamidala said – “ We are also modifying the portal and adding automatic filters, including years of experience, to avoid ineligible people from registering”.
The portal and the guidelines released by UGC in the year 2022, both confirm that no academic qualification is necessary if the applicant expert has 15 years of experience in Professionalism. On the queries of tenure and payments, both sources ensure that the experts may engage up to for one year initially, while a Professor of Practice can serve up to 3 years maximum, and in exceptional cases, the total service can not extend after 4 years.
The HEIs will get the Professors of practice for Engineering, science, technology, Entrepreneurship, Commerce, Social Sciences, Literature, media departments, etc. The new teachers in the new category will be salaried by engaging one among the Either funded by Industries, by HEIs from their own Resources, or on an Honorary Basis. Jagadesh Mamidala also suggested – “The experts are looking for several portals, they don’t need to search and apply for jobs in individual colleges/ Universities if they register on the Portal of PoPs.”
