The University Grants Commission (also known as UGC) has formed a committee that will evaluate professor appointments and investigates the timely issuance of PhDs at higher education institutions referred to as HEIs. These responsibilities fall within the purview of the committee. The Commission will form this squad in an attempt to enforce compliance with the regulations and prevent their violation. The Commission had its 568th meeting on April 24, 2023, and at that meeting, they decided to go ahead and make this decision.
Higher education institutions, often known as HEIs, are tasked with the responsibility of fostering intellectual growth and disseminating information in order to contribute to the overall development of the nation. As part of its obligation to promote and regulate university education, the University Grants Commission is responsible for regularly announcing guidelines to preserve the quality of professors and the quality of research degrees. This is stated by the Chairman of the UGC, M. Jagadesh Kumar.
This permanent committee became necessary as a result of the many instances of appointment criterion breaches that occurred over the course of the years and resulted in complaints being submitted to regulatory bodies.
The following are two of the legislation that will specify the minimum qualifications for recruiting new teachers, promoting existing instructors, and granting PhDs:
- The regulation issued by the Commission in 2018 regarding the minimum requirements for employing teachers and other academic staff in universities and colleges, as well as measures for preserving standards in higher education.
- In addition to that, there are Minimum Standards and Procedures for the Award of Ph.D. Degree Regulations, 2022 that were created by the Commission.
Both of the aforementioned pieces of legislation will define the criteria that must be met in order to choose candidates who are qualified for open teaching positions and to keep the quality of research degrees that are granted by higher education institutions at a certain level. Additionally, it is necessary to demonstrate compliance with a number of regulations.
