University Grant Commission (UGC) has invited stakeholder groups to nominate two faculty members for the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) training program. IKS is a division of the Ministry of Education that focuses on traditional knowledge applied in society. A key objective of the program is to prepare faculty members to teach IKS at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The program emphasizes India’s vast traditional knowledge, which encompasses diverse cultures and languages. UGC seeks to preserve and innovate this knowledge for modern applications in fields such as technology, science, art, health, and communication. In the academic year 2023-24, 1000 participants will participate in the training program over a period of six days at six selected HRDCs centers across India. Assistant Professors, Associate Professors, and Full Professors will be given priority. Among the selected HRDCs are the University of Delhi, RTM Nagpur University, University of Madras, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), and University of Kashmir.
The University Grant Commission (UGC) on 13th July yesterday, released a notice for stakeholders of HEIs asking them to send two faculties members’ names for the IKS training program. UGC had issued guidelines for training faculty on the Indian Knowledge System already. The training will be considered as a short term course. The UGC seeks teachers who should teach the foundational course of IKS at UG/PG guidelines.
The UGC is planning to organize a six days training Program for Faculties on Indian Knowledge System (IKS). Indian Knowledge System as an Institution is a Division of the Ministry of Education that strengthens the traditional knowledge applied in society.
The functions of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) comprise the monitoring of subject-wise interdisciplinary research groups, it establishes the research centers to receive the practices and applications applied by society traditionally. The IKS works through various Research & Development Laboratories, institutions, colleges, and organizations.
Why the Indian Knowledge System (IKS)?
India has vast Knowledge, which is mostly communicated by oral tradition, through Mimicry or Imitating, and practices. Interestingly knowledge exists in many various diverse cultures, regions, geographical environments, and languages. The Indian Knowledge System consists of the sources of Indian Culture, Philosophy, and spirituality of thousand years. These knowledge systems are studied in Ayurveda, Yoga, Vedanta, and Vedic Sciences.
Preservation and Innovation of IKS
The Modi-led Indian Government considers these all are still relevant and are applied in the modern world in various ways of study like – Technology, Science, Art, Health, Communication, etc. That’s why the UGC seeks to preserve and innovate the source of this traditional knowledge.
For the upcoming training program, UGC has requested Vice Chancellors, Principals, and Head to nominate two faculty from their institutions. The name will be submitted on UGC IKS Portal at www.ugciks.in. The Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Full Professor will be given priority in the academic year 2023-24.
The training program will be of six days for 1000 participants and will be organized between July-October 2023 at six selected HRDCs centers across India. The UGC has also released the schedule of the IKS Training programme. The six HRDCs situated in – the University of Delhi, RTM Nagpur University, University of Madras Banaras Hindu University BHU, and University of Kashmir have been selected as training Programme Centers.
