The University of Madras achieved a reputation with an A++ grade yesterday. The national assessment authority NAAC has awarded 3.59 out of 4 scores. The university could reach A grade in 2014 after which this year it has been included in the Category 1 universities list. UGC grants a budget of 100 crore and full authoritative power of autonomy to category 1 universities.
There are 25 total universities in the Category 1 list, and most of them belong to state universities. The University of Madras is the third oldest university among the four Universities established by British rule. The University of Mumbai achieved this reputation last 3rd Cycle.
National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has conducted its 4th Cycle under which the University of Madras has been awarded a 3.59 CGPA. Vice chancellor S.Gowri in a cultural event in the presence of the NAAC team’s visit said “Everything could happen because of the illustrious alumni”.
Former Vice Chancellor S.P. Thyagarajan informed “Now the University will be listed under Category 1. It will have the power by UGC of two- campuses and offshore campuses, and a design curriculum.” For this Category 1 university need only to inform UGC.
