Karnataka Primary Education Minister said on 9th July to replace New Education Policy with State Education Policy. The minister was on a primary school visit in Bengaluru and his statement has come a day after the Karnataka Budget announcement. Chief Minister Siddramaiah in his budget speech called NEP as a UES, which violates the Constitution and is against – Indian Unity in Diversity.
The Karnataka government Chief Minister Shri Siddramaia during his Budget speech on 7th July had said -” The NEP brought by the central government is noncooperative with the federal system of Constituion, its framing, and visions that ignore the constitution and democratic values”. By announcing that his government would replace the NEP with the SEP, he named NEP as ‘Uniform Education System”. Further, he added that UES (NEP) is unsuitable for India, which has diverse religions, languages, and cultures.
The NEP was implemented in Karnataka by the earlier BJP government. But now it is in the process of being withdrawn by the Congress government in Karnataka. It has been claimed in the Vidhansabha that a new upcoming SEP will be formulated keeping in mind the state and local realities.
The Karnataka government has allocated 37,587 crore rupees for education development in Karnataka and 24,166 crore for women and child development. The education budget allocated for the session 2023-24 covers 11% of the total budget announced in the Vidhansabha. Mr. MC Sudhakar, the Karnataka Higher Education Minister also has criticized the NEP.
