The government of Meghalaya, in a press release dated 25th July, announced that the State Education Commission Commissioner has come into force with immediate effect. The commission will observe the educational situation followed by a diagnosis with strategic recommendations for reforms in the Education system. The MSEC is made of one chairperson, Two Advisors, and one secretary.
The commission was constituted last year, Nov 2022, in a meeting chaired by CM Conrad K Sangama. The rules and provisions of the Meghalaya State Education Commission are made by the State government, and the commission will work under the Meghalaya State government.
The roles and responsibilities of the MSEC are to look into the matters related to the school, College System, salary, and institutions’ structure, school management functioning, and accountability. The commission will also recommend, issue guidelines, and form new rules and regulations in order to concrete solutions, strategic intervention, and Policy decisions for development and reforms in the school and Higher Education system. The commission will work in tune with National Education Policy NEP 2020.
Office Bearers of the MSEC: The MSEC consists of four major posts above its committee/ body of members. On the Supreme four Posts, chiefs of several organizations have been appointed as –
1.) Chairperson of MSEC – Prof. SM Sungoh (from Department of Education, NEHU),
2.) Advisor Academic – Prof. David Reid Syiemlieh ( Former Chairman of UPSC),
3.) Advisor School Sector Reforms – Shri. Tony TC Marak ( Retd IFS & Former Executive Chairman MBOSE),
4.) Edu Department Member Secretary – Shri Ambrose Ch. Marak ( Secretary Govt of Meghalaya, Education Department).
What are the other Educational Directorate in Meghalaya: Apart from the newly introduced MSEC, Meghalaya has a Department of Education, which is divided into three Directorates as follows –
1.) Directorate of School Education and Literacy
2.) Directorate of Higher & Technical Education
3.) Directorate of Educational Research and Training.
All three directorates will now be guidelines and ruled under Meghalaya State Education Commission as it has been implemented once.
